How to: Create a cozy Burr Basket for that special someone

You might have heard the word burr basket or brr basket pop up recently on your feed. But what is a burr basket, and how do I make one of my own?

A burr basket is a basket filled with goodies and other things, that light up the colder months. Thats where the name comes from, brr as in brr it is cold outside. And it can contain a multitude of things, candles, blankets, candy, really anything.

A burr basket is a perfect way to show how much you care about someone, by choosing things that are personal and special to them. And it doesn't have to be a Christmas present, you can give it away during any cold month, to show a little extra appreciation.

Here are a few suggestions on how you can make your own burr basket, to warm the heart of that special someone.

Start with a good basket

Okay, the one thing that every burr basket has in common is the basket. You want a good sized basket, that can be reused for something else later. You also want to make sure it is good quality, and matches the recipients aesthetic. So if they like minimalistic colors, go for a grey or beige basket, if they like color, go for a colorful one and so on.

And as mentioned before, make sure it can be reused for something else later. If your partner likes to plant and garden, use a basket that is good for that. And if they usually have a Christmas tree, why not go for a basket that can fit their Christmas tree stand? Our basket smart is not only well crafted and stylish, but can also fit our Christmas tree stand smart. A good and usable basket basically. Or why not our wine box? Have you seen it?

Something warming

The other constant in a burr basket is something that will warm that person up during winter. And this can be either a blanket, a sweater or both. And since Christmas is coming up, why not use a Christmas sweater? Something that will not only keep them warm, but stylish and ready for any holiday party, like this one!

Or you could go with a blanket, but make sure to check what your partner likes and what kind of decor they have at home to make sure it matches. And that the blanket is really fluffy.

As long as it will help your recipient keep warm, it is perfect to put in the basket.

A nice candle

Candles are the perfect way to set a mood. And for a burr basket, go for a candle with a "warm" scent. Something that reminds you of something warm, like cinnamon or pine, and not a "clean" scent like cotton or lemon. Those two are more summery scents, and not ideal for winter. If your partner is vegan, make sure to check that your candle is as well.

A nice candle can really set the mood for the winter season, both with its warmth and glow.

If you want a more luxorious feeling to your candle, go for a candle with a wooden wick (like ours).

Something sweet or salty

Most burr baskets come with something edible or drinkable, that brings a warm feeling. And you can really choose anything you know your partner likes here, chocolate, candy, chips, hot chocolate mix, etc. If you want to make your basket a bit more personal, why not include your own homemade candy, or make a jar of hot chocolate mix? Here's how:
You will need:

  • Cocoa Powder
  • Sugar or dry sugar substitute
  • Seasonings, like cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla etc.
  • Marshmallows
And to make it, just mix equal amounts of sugar with cocoa powder into a jar. Then season lightly, for example a pinch per teaspoon of cocoa powder and sugar. Add your marshmallows last as a finishing touch.
Or if your partner isn't a big fan of sweets, add some tea and crackers. As long as it is something your partner likes, it is perfect to put in your burr basket.

Something cuddly

Another thing to add is something to cuddle with, like a stuffed animal, teddy bear, or even a pillow. Choose something that really reflects the recipients interests. Maybe a teddy bear from their favorite show, a pillow with a quote they like, or if you are crafty, crochet or knit something the person can cuddle with. The most important thing is that it is nice and soft, and of course cute! Other than that, there aren't any rules to stuffed animals or plushies, as long as your partner likes it, put it in the basket.

Other things to add:

So how do I make a burr basket?

To make your own, personal burr basket, start by taking your basket and putting down either the blanket or sweater at the bottom. Then place your pillow or cuddly thing, then the candle and last of all, your treats or drinks. Basically, start with the big, soft stuff, and the delicate, and more fragile items last. If you want, you can wrap your basket with cellofan or paper, but most people leave it open. And present your basket casually, maybe just leave it on the couch or a table for the recipient to discover.

The most important thing about a burr basket is that it contains something that the person who gets it will like, and that will keep them warm. These are just a few suggestions for what to put in the basket, but as long as your gift comes from the heart, we are sure it will be loved by your partner.
