How to: Plant and tend to your Lawn

A beautiful and well-maintained lawn is essential for your garden. It sets the tone and creates an inviting, summery atmosphere. But how do you achieve that perfect lawn you see on social media? Today, we’ll go through everything you need to know to get a flawless lawn.

Choosing the Right Grass

Creating a perfect lawn starts with choosing the right type of grass.

The most common types in the Nordic region are:

  • Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne): Fast-growing and durable.
  • Red fescue (Festuca rubra): Low-growing and drought-resistant.
  • White clover (Trifolium repens): Improves soil nitrogen levels and withstands heavy foot traffic.

You can choose to plant your grass from seed or lay pre-grown sod. The best approach is to ask in-store, as they have the best knowledge about which type of grass will thrive in your specific conditions.

Once you have chosen your grass type, it's time to prepare the soil.

Preparing the Soil

Before planting, it’s crucial to ensure the area is well-drained. If the soil is too compact and lacks aeration, adding sand can help. Compost is also beneficial as it makes the soil more porous. You can also use a rake to loosen the soil and create ridges for your grass seeds. This rake will give the perfect depth for planting grass seeds.

Once the soil is ready, you can either sow your grass seeds or roll out sod—whichever method suits you best. The ideal time for planting is spring or autumn when temperatures and moisture levels are optimal for grass growth. If you choose to use roll out grass, make sure you have a nice, sturdy wheelbarrow to get your grass rolls where they need to go without unnecessary strain on your body.

Lawn Care

To maintain a beautiful lawn year-round, follow these key steps:

Regular Mowing

A well-kept lawn requires regular mowing. However, avoid cutting it too short just to reduce mowing frequency. Leave the grass at 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) to prevent stress and discourage weed growth.

Use a sharp, high-quality lawnmower to ensure clean cuts instead of damaging the grass. Also, vary your mowing direction to prevent the grass from becoming too compacted.

Watering

Your lawn needs regular watering to stay lush and green. Aim for 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 inches) of water per week, spread over a couple of sessions. This encourages deep root growth. The easiest way to do this is with a good oscillating sprinkler.

The best time to water is early morning or late evening, as this prevents water from evaporating too quickly—especially in hot summer months. However, always check local water regulations to avoid using sprinklers during watering bans.

Be careful not to overwater, as excessive moisture can cause waterlogging and lead to fungal infections in your lawn.

Fertilizing

For the best lawn conditions, fertilize occasionally.

Spring & summer: Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to promote growth.

Autumn: Switch to a potassium-rich fertilizer to strengthen the grass for winter.

Preferably use organic or natural fertilizers for environmental reasons.

Common Lawn Problems & Solutions

Achieving a perfect lawn sounds easy, but common issues often arise. Here’s how to tackle them:

Weeds

Weeds are inevitable, but they can be managed. The simplest way is to pull them out by the roots before they spread. You can also use eco-friendly weed killers, but manual removal is the most effective method. To prevent weeds, reseed bare patches so weeds have no space to grow.

Moss

Moss can look beautiful in some areas, but it often thrives in moist conditions and can take over your lawn. Similar to weeds, the best approach is to remove the moss and reseed the area with grass.

Check your watering habits—too much moisture can encourage moss growth.

Brown Patches

Brown patches in your lawn are often caused by either too much or too little water. Try adjusting your watering routine and see if the affected area improves. If the problem persists, it might be a fungal infection, in which case you should use a suitable treatment.

Autumn & Winter Lawn Care

To prepare your lawn for the colder months, keep it clear of fallen leaves, as they trap moisture and can suffocate the grass. Regular raking is essential. And use a good quality rake to make sure you get all the leaves, and simultaniously create new pores in your lawn.

Similarly, snow buildup can have a similar effect, so occasionally clearing some areas can help prevent damage.

I hope these tips help you keep your lawn beautiful all year round!
