Red. Romantic red, coral red, rose red... The choice of colours is endless. There are so many shades of red and you may want to mix it up, or keep it all in one tone. Below are a few of our favourite red flowers, shrubs or trees.
Camellia - Camellia japonica
Camellia is a shrub with large gorgeous flowers that are available in shades of pink, red and white. Native to China, Taiwan and Japan, Camellia is a member of the tea-plant family. A camellia is an incredibly delicate plant that needs to be kept indoors (preferably in a conservatory) as long as there are chances of frost, and it must never be relocated when it is blooming as the buds can break off. In summer it is perfectly fine to leave it outdoors, where it will thrive the most! But make sure your Camellia is not in a too sunny spot, but preferably one with a little shade. A Camellia does not need to be pruned, but you can trim any branches that are sticking out. We recommend our secateurs for easy pruning and trimming of branches. Because a Camellia needs to be relocated depending on temperatures, it will thrive best in a larger pot.
Rudbeckia 'Cherry Brandy' - Rudbeckia hirta var. pulcherrima
Rudbeckias in 'Cherry Brandy' have an incredibly beautiful deep red colour. The plant will grow to about 50 cm tall and bloom from June to October, making it ideal for both beds and pots. Rudbeckia thrives best in sunny spots and is very easy to both plant and care for. Our secateurs can be used to remove any wilted leaves and flowers. We also recommend our hoe, planting spade and weeder set to make sure the soil where your Rudbeckia is going to be placed is in pristine condition!
Garden Phlox 'Coral Flame' - Phlox paniculata
Garden Phlox 'Coral Flame' is a very fragrant, bright coral-red flowered perennial that thrives best in full sun to semi-shade. Garden Phlox is very low maintenance and will flower well into autumn, from July to September. Garden Phlox is trimmed down to ground level in spring, and for best results we recommend our secateurs and garden scissors. Naturally, these can also be useful for trimming away any wilted leaves and flowers during the flowering period.
Garden verbena - Glandularia x hybrida
Verbena has long been associated with myth and mystery, and has been referred to in the past as 'Tears of Isis' and 'Tears of Hera'. Verbena provides small attractive flowers that grows in clusters, and can be found in several lovely colours of which red is only one. The plant reaches a height of about 25 cm and is thus ideal in both a pot and a bed, and can be used as an outstanding ground cover. Verbena thrives best in sun and is an easily cared for plant that does not demand too much attention. You can top your verbena for a more bushy growth habit, and here we recommend our secateurs for a neat and tidy cut.
