A trend is to hide the base of the Christmas tree in a basket. Keep in mind that if you put the tree down as it is, without the base, and are going to stabilize it with rocks and soil, the basket should be plastered on the inside so that you can water your tree. You can also use a flower pot without a hole in the bottom. Moss or rocks on top of the basket for decoration and filling is common.
